I went for a run yesterday and got to witness something that, in my head (applying Alaskan stereotypes to my view of the world), was a quintessential Alaskan moment. I'm rounding the corner on the road behind the McDonalds (one of two fast food restaurants in town - the other is Subway)...mind you, the McDonald's is located in probably the busiest intersection in town - the only intersection that has a real traffic light...Anyways, I'm rounding the corner, and across the street, sauntering through the McDonald's drivethru is a freaking moose! Man, I wish I had my camera (I stole this picture from the internet). It looked like it was about to order some fries or something.
But, to be honest, I'm kind of scared of moose - more people are injured and killed by moose every year than by bears. They were one of the first things I was warned about when I came here (I'd like to pause for a moment and reflect on how ridiculous that sounds out of context - "Welcome to Alaska! Beware of the moose!"), because last month was calving season. Moose calves are small enough to be vulnerable to bear attack, so the moose all come down into town to give birth. I think they realize that bears are less likely to be in town. Even so, moose mothers are especially aggressive at calving time, and will charge you. They say if you come across a moose in the road, YOU go around IT. Now, my office is set back from the road, and to get to the entrance you have to wind around this gravel driveway. Moose are not an infrequent sight on the property, because its set back from town a bit, near a marsh and nicely wooded. The first few weeks I was here, every morning when I rode my bike around those bends in the driveway, I was so scared of biking right into a moose. I really have no idea what I'd do in that situation. Probably get trampled.

Your use of "calving season" sounds funny. I'm imagining moose and their calves shaving legs for some eccentric reason. Oh conversion zero diversions...
Thanks for visiting - keep reading! I'll add you to my blogroll.
